Labour Exploitation in Cannabis Farms Mapping Project

Privacy Notice and Informed Consent

Who am I?

We are a team of researchers at the University of Birmingham in the UK.
We are interested in mapping where hidden abuses are happening in different regions of the UK — this includes labour exploitation in cannabis farms in Scotland.

Currently, there is no reliable baseline data about the prevalence of labour exploitation in cannabis farms in the UK.
This makes it difficult to assess whether government policies or the actions of key actors — such as specialist support services, police, social services, local government, or schools — are effectively helping to end this crime.

This project is part of a process to secure this much-needed baseline data.
We run surveys where people are asked to compare different areas based on the risk of specific abuses.

If you have any questions about the research, please contact:
Dr Rowland Seymour – r.g.seymour@bham.ac.uk

Why are you being asked to take part in this research?

We want to record your view of the likely risk of labour exploitation in cannabis farms in different parts of Scotland.

You are being asked because:

  • You work in Scotland and may know about labour exploitation.
  • You may be an expert in this area.
  • Even if you don’t work in this area, your opinion is still valuable.

Our research method relies on the “wisdom of the crowd”, so we want to hear from everyone.

What will happen to the data you give?

  • We are not asking for any personal information that could identify you.
  • Your answers will be anonymous.
  • We will process your data in line with the University of Birmingham’s data-handling policies.
  • We will retain the data for as long as we are working on this topic.
  • The dataset will be published in an open-access repository so other researchers can use it in future.

Thank you for taking the time to complete our survey on this important topic.
Your answers will help us understand the prevalence of labour exploitation in the UK, and hopefully contribute to ending it by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
